ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS: A CASE STUDY OF STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN COLLEGES OF '“EDUCATION

The purpose of this paper is to bring the language and communication skills component in General Studies into closer scrutiny in order to establish the factors responsible for the students' poor performance in our Colleges of education. The following assumptions were critically reviewed. Lack of relevant materials or contents in the syllabus affects the students’ performance. Negative attitudes of the students towards General English in General Studies affect their performances in it. Poor foundation or background in the English Language contributes to their poor performances. Lack of relevant instructional materials affects the students’ performances. Students’ population in General English classes retards the students progress in the study of Genera! English. On the basis of the above assumptions, suggestions were given in order to ameliorate the situation.
